Advocating on your behalf: LHP asks CMS to reduce administrative burden
Nick Kashey, M.D., LHP Medical Director
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently solicited stakeholder opinions about the documentation requirements associated with the different Evaluation and Management (E+M) levels of service. Legacy Health Partners responded with this letter (posted on LHP member team site), in which we strongly supported simplification of the rules around documentation based on the principles of effective communication between providers, safer care and preventing provider burnout.
E+M codes represent the level of complexity for provider billing, and directly correlate to the amount of reimbursement. Specifically, CMS is considering removing the History and Physical requirements and determining the level of service only from the medical decision-making element. They are also looking for ways to make the medical decision-making rules less complex.
We are hopeful that these efforts contribute to the future easing of the documentation burden that providers feel today. Thanks for your support as we continue to strive to put the joy back into the practice of medicine.
