Gamma Knife

What is the Gamma Knife?

The Gamma Knife Perfexion is ultra-precise radiation to treat complex or multiple brain tumors. It takes just one day. It is the gold standard "stereotactic radiosurgery", used to treat both benign and cancerous brain tumors and brain metastases.

Gamma Knife doesn’t use a knife at all — it uses radiation to damage tumors without opening the skull. Multiple, precise radiation beams from many directions converge on the tumor. Gamma Knife minimizes radiation to the surrounding normal brain tissue, making it more precise than whole-brain radiation.

Benefits of Gamma Knife

  • Single-day outpatient treatment
  • Noninvasive therapy
  • Quicker recovery than surgery
  • Treatment of inoperable tumors
  • Proven – it is used on more than 50,000 patients a year

Treatment with Gamma Knife is usually one day long. The treatment itself takes 15–40 minutes and is performed with local anesthesia. A radiation oncologist and neurosurgeon direct the treatment.

Is Gamma Knife right for you?

Among the patients suited for Gamma Knife are those:

  • With a tumor in the brain that is too difficult to reach with standard radiation or surgery
  • Who are not healthy enough or too old for surgery
  • Who prefer a less-invasive treatment

In some cases, Gamma Knife is the only feasible approach for treatment. Gamma Knife may also be used along with standard radiation treatment.

Gamma Knife is also used for some non-cancerous tumors and other conditions, such as:

  • Meningiomas
  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Ocular disorders
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Pituitary adenomas
  • Craniopharyngiomas
