Legacy's Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Program is the first screening program in the Portland-Metro area that identifies women who may be at high-risk for breast cancer. The risk is due to family history and/or genetic mutation.
Women with a genetic mutation have up to a 65 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and an almost six-fold higher risk of a second breast cancer diagnosis. In addition, women who harbor a mutation have a 20–40 percent lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer.

"Genetic mutations can increase the risk of other cancers such as pancreatic cancer. It is important to remember that these genes can be passed on from either maternal or paternal lineages. In addition, there are other less common mutations that can be detected more accurately with this risk assessment tool."
- Paul Dorsey, cancer genetic counselor, Legacy Cancer Institute

- Personal or family history of breast cancer before age 50
- Personal or family history of ovarian cancer at any age

- Male breast cancer diagnosed in first-degree relatives
- Relatives of a gene mutation carrier
- People of certain ethnic backgrounds such as Ashkenazi Jewish, French Canadian or Scandinavian descent

How it works
Legacy Breast Health Center nurses administer the assessment using Hughes Risk Assessment software, the only tool that combines multiple risk models. It assesses a comprehensive family history to evaluate whether you may have increased risk of developing breast cancer. Once your risk level is assessed, you will be offered individualized follow-up services aimed at significantly lowering your risk of developing cancer. These services may include genetic counseling and testing, additional imaging and preventive surgery.
