Legacy Emanuel Hospital
2801 N. Gantenbein Avenue
Portland, OR 97227

Legacy Emanuel Medical Center is a full-status Level I Trauma Center. We're recognized for our dedicated staff and the quality of our patient care, but also for the life-saving physical layout we call "The Corridor of Life."

We're also the first center in the Pacific Northwest to be verified by the American College of Surgeons - the highest designation available for trauma care. This means that we've met stringent requirements for high-quality care for all trauma patients.

Our full-time surgeons provide continuous surgical leadership in statewide trauma system development, research, surgical resident education and quality improvement. Along with other private practice surgeons, they cover first and second trauma calls around the clock.

The Corridor of Life

Emanuel Hospital's "corridor of life" is a unique floor plan of five trauma resuscitation rooms and two operating suites with full radiographic services centrally located in the Emergency Department/Trauma Unit. An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Trauma Recovery and Acute Care Unit (TRACU) are directly adjacent. This design helps us to use resources efficiently, perform surgery right from the emergency department, and minimize patient transport.

ICUs: Patients who need intensive care are admitted to one of our Intensive Care Units, located in the East and West wing. These units specialize in critical care for trauma and surgical patients and are staffed by highly skilled nurses who are specially trained in trauma, neurosurgical, and cardiac critical care.

TRACU is a 34-bed recovery unit and a key component of the trauma program. Our staff cares for a variety of patients with complex neurological, surgical, orthopedic and trauma issues in a very close, supportive, collaborative team environment.

Patient care

Our multidisciplinary teams visit every trauma patient every week. These visits allow the team to design a care plan, discuss major medical or treatment issues, outline goals, confer with the family as needed and plan for the patient's discharge. Each customized team might include:

  • Trauma surgeons
  • Resident staff
  • Consulting physicians
  • Physical therapists
  • Pastoral care
  • Rehabilitation admission coordinator
