Scoliosis

At Randall Children's Orthopedics we offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children with all forms of scoliosis.

What is scoliosis?

A normal spine, when viewed from behind, appears straight. A spine affected by scoliosis shows a sideways curve and a rotation of the bones in the back, known as vertebrae. In a child with scoliosis, you might notice a difference in shoulder height, hip height or position.

Treating Scoliosis

There is no universal treatment for scoliosis, because each patient is different. Our experts understand that caring for kids with scoliosis means looking at the whole body and understanding how a curved spine affects the child's daily activities. The goal of scoliosis treatment is initially to minimize progression (worsening) of the curve.  If the curve becomes severe, the goal of surgery is to correct the deformity (straighten the curve) and to stop future progression.

Treatment for scoliosis may include:

  • Observation
  • A back brace
  • Scoliosis surgery
