Home Care Advice - Oral Antihistamines

Oral Antihistamines

  • Antihistamines help reduce sneezing, itching and runny nose. Take antihistamines continuously during pollen season (continuously is the key to control). Take over-the-counter loratadine 10 mg (e.g., Claritin, Alavert) once each day. Some antihistamines cause more drowsiness than others. Loratidine is a newer (second generation) antihistamine and it causes less sleepiness than diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or Chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimeton, Chlor-tripolon).
    • Antihistamines may cause sleepiness. Do not drink, drive or operate dangerous machinery while taking antihistamines.
    • Read the package instructions thoroughly on all medications that you take.
