When to Call Your Doctor - Call Your Doctor Within 24 Hours

Call Your Doctor Within 24 Hours (between 9am and 4pm) If

  • You think your child needs to be seen
  • Doesn't seem to be gaining weight by day 5
  • Less than 3 normal-sized, yellow-colored, seedy stools/day during the first 4 weeks of age (EXCEPTION: before 5 days of life while milk is coming in)
  • Day 2-4 of life and no stool in over 24 hours
  • Less than 6 wet diapers/day (EXCEPTION: before 5 days of life while milk is coming in)
  • Day 2-4 of life and no urine in over 8 hours
  • The mother has signs of breast infection (red, tender area on breast) (EXCEPTION: localized engorgement)
