Environmentally preferred purchasing

Environmentally Preferred Purchasing (EPP) is the purchase of products and services whose environmental impacts have been considered and found to be less damaging to the environment and human health when compared to competing products and services.

Legacy Health has received national recognition as a leader in environmental sustainability. Our supplier partners contribute to our success in this area by helping us understand how their products are environmentally sustainable and reduce harm to the health of people and the environment.

When working with Legacy Health staff to fulfill a product need or when submitting quotes, bids or proposals, please be sure to highlight product features or options that improve people’s health and/or reduce environmental impact.

Principles

A set of established Environmentally Preferred Purchasing principles factor into all product evaluations and recommendations. These principles will not be the sole factors in determining product selection, but will be evaluated along with other quality, service and total cost components. Environmentally Preferred Purchasing principles also recognize that natural resources and landfill space are limited and that the cost of disposal is increasing. Most importantly, these principles support improving the health of our staff, patients and communities by reducing exposure to toxic substances.

Preferences

Legacy Health will give preference to products that:

  • Will not result in harm to our staff, patients or the communities we serve
  • Consume fewer resources when manufactured and when in use
  • Do not include chemicals of concern in the manufacturing process or in the use of the product

  • Can be easily re-used or recycled
  • Are packaged and transported in such a way as to minimize waste
  • Do not adversely impact indoor or outdoor air quality
