Randall Children’s Hospital opens new sleep center just for kids

Portland, OR – 25 percent of children between the ages of 1 and 5 years old and over 40 percent of children ages 8 to 10 years old experience some type of sleep disturbance. Carrie Wilkinson of Portland knew something was wrong with her 5-year-old daughter Caleigha when she would stop breathing while she was sleeping. Concerned about her daughter, Carrie took her to the Randall Children’s Sleep Medicine Clinic where she was evaluated and then underwent an overnight sleep study the Randall Children’s Hospital Sleep Center.

Dr. Teng Ji, a pediatric neurologist and pediatric sleep specialist determined that Caleigha has sleep apnea, a sleep-related breathing disorder that is one of the most common sleep disorders in children.

Randall Children’s Sleep Medicine Clinic provides specialized care for children and young adults experiencing a variety of sleep issues, such as:

• Sleep-related breathing disorders (including sleep apnea)
• Restless leg syndrome
• Insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep)
• Narcolepsy
• Circadian rhythm disorder (irregular and disruptive sleep schedules)
• Parasomnia (nightmares, sleep terrors, sleep talking and sleep walking)

Children will receive an initial evaluation in clinic, which includes: a sleep-focused history, a physical and neurological examination, as well as a review of sleep questionnaires and diaries. Once areas of sleep difficulty are identified, an overnight sleep study may be recommended. Using this data a comprehensive treatment and management plan are developed.

“Children and families are at the center of all we do. All of the doctors, nurses and sleep technologists specialize in working with children, and the center’s environment is designed to make kids comfortable,” says Dr. Ji.
The Randall Children’s Hospital Sleep Center opened in April 2013, and is located on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus. The 2-bed sleep center was designed for children and young adults, as well as their parents, during an overnight sleep study.
