Legacy Devers Eye Institute Expands Presence in Portland-Metro Region

Internationally-renowned eye care provider and research institute opens new clinic at Legacy Emanuel, grows presence on flagship campus

December 4, 2013 (Portland, Ore.)—Legacy Devers Eye Institute announced today it has expanded its presence in the region with the opening of Legacy Devers Eye Institute – Emanuel and with significant growth on its current campus at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.

Opened in November 2013, Legacy Devers Eye Institute – Emanuel is a comprehensive ophthalmology clinic and will provide northeast Portland patients with a full range of eye care services including treatment of glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and ophthalmic trauma. Blake Acohido, MD, is the new medical director of eye trauma for Legacy Health and will perform routine eye exams, deliver expertise in eye trauma and work directly with Legacy Emanuel Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Trauma staff. Jennifer Sinclair, OD will be available to see patients for routine eye care and contact lens fitting. Legacy Devers Eye Institute – Emanuel, a department of Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, will be located on the Legacy Emanuel Campus at Medical Plaza Office Building, 300 N. Graham St, Suite 300, Portland OR 97227. It will be open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Legacy Devers Eye Institute also underwent rapid expansion at its flagship location on the Legacy Good Samaritan campus with the addition of 1,000 square feet of new clinic and office space, which also reopened in November 2013. This space makes room for new providers and provide clinical area for a new contact lens clinic.

Grand Opening Open House and Tour

Legacy Devers Eye Institute will mark its grand opening with an open house and tour on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at the Legacy Devers Eye Institute – Emanuel Clinic located at 300 N. Graham St, Suite 300, Portland OR 97227. The event is open to the public and will introduce the clinic’s new ophthalmologist, optometrist and staff to the community and also include coffee and treats as well as a tour of the new eye clinic at Emanuel.

Blake Acohido, M.D., Ophthalmologist
Board eligible in general ophthalmology, Dr. Acohido has clinical interests in all areas of comprehensive ophthalmology, including treatment of cataract, glaucoma diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and ophthalmic trauma. Dr. Acohido received a medical degree from the Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science. He completed his residence at Oregon Health & Science University’s Casey Eye Institute and Legacy Devers Eye Institute.

Jennifer Sinclair, O.D., Optometrist
Dr. Sinclair is a doctor of optometry at Legacy Devers Eye Institute—Emanuel. Her clinical interests include glaucoma, cornea, diabetic eye care, and ocular oncology. She received her degree from Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University in Michigan and performed her optometric residency with a focus in ocular disease management at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida. She is a fellow with the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Sinclair enjoys traveling, camping, and hiking.

Elizabeth Verner-Cole, M.D., Retina Specialist
Located at Legacy Good Samaritan, Dr. Verner-Cole is board certified in ophthalmology and a retina specialist with Legacy Devers Eye Institute. Her clinical interests include medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and retinal detachment. Dr. Verner-Cole speaks English and Spanish. She received her medical degree and completed a residency from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She completed fellowships in ophthalmic pathology at the Methodist Hospital in Houston and in vitreoretinal surgery at Oregon Health & Science University.
