Legacy in the News: Dr. Nathalie Johnson, dancer turned oncologist, joins Oregon Cultural Trust board
February 26, 2014
Dr. Nathalie McDowell Johnson, a prominent Portland physician especially well known in breast cancer circles but less well known for her previous profession in ballet, has joined the board of the Oregon Cultural Trust.
Appointed by Gov. John Kitzhaber and confirmed by the Oregon Senate, Johnson joins the board March 1.
A surgical oncologist and medical director of the Legacy Cancer Institute and Legacy Breast Health Centers, she grew up in St. Thomas and danced with Ballet Theatre of the Virgin Islands before attending Howard University. She attended medical school at University of Virginia.
A Cultural Trust news release quotes Johnson: "I would love," she says, "to make sure all Oregonians have the opportunity to take part in the culture, art and heritage that is available. My mother taught us that, with imagination and creativity, there is no time for boredom."
The trust is devoted to developing and sustaining the arts, heritage and humanities, making more than $1.5 million in grants to nonprofits statewide.
