Legacy in the News: When the clown doors opened

The New Calliope Magazine cover story
March/April 2014

Rita Smith Barrett, known professionally as “Pakita” clowns for patients and families at Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. A native Oregonian, Rita was born at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. For the past six years, she has also infused her clowning skills -including improv, drama and humor- into her other job as a high school Spanish teacher.

Rita’s son was born with multiple disabilities and opened the door to her hospital clowning. He taught his family about finding joy in hard places. Rita’s story is an inspiration for all of us who need to be reminded why we do what we do.
