A life-changing adventure, an incredible recovery
Legacy Emanuel Medical Center | Intensive Care (ICU), Trauma
In September 2003, while descending Mt. Adams with fellow students from the University of Portland, a 500-pound boulder struck Jamie Hunter, throwing her more than 80 feet down the mountain.
Amazing resources assisted in her prolonged rescue, including medical and military personnel. Upon admission to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center operating room, her heart quit beating and had to be restarted by the staff.
Jamie was in the hospital for more than three months, with her family by her side. After 70 surgeries in 82 days at Legacy Emanuel, Jamie emerged healthy, thankful and with a sense of purpose. She eventually returned to University of Portland, volunteered at the Legacy Emanuel trauma center and, nine years, after her injury was still following her dream of helping people with disabilities enjoy outdoor activities.
