Legacy Meridian Park Hospital has one of the lowest wait times among area hospitals
When you’re feeling your worst, time can feel like it’s moving slower than usual. If you’ve found yourself in the waiting room of your local hospital emergency department, that feeling of pace can feel even more amplified at the hospital itself.
There are many factors that impact those wait times including hospital occupancy as well as the complexity and severity of cases at any given time. Staff must constantly evaluate and respond in real-time to those and many factors to deliver the best care they can.
The Portland Business Journal recently published an article with data provided by ProPublica that analyzed data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. According to that analysis in the article, Oregon has the eighth-longest average wait time among hospitals studied.
Legacy Meridian Park Hospital ranked third among Portland-area hospitals with an average wait time of 21-minutes before being seen by a doctor. The hospital emergency department institutes that real-time evaluation and assessment of factors impacting wait times and has found success but that doesn’t mean staff can let up. Sandy Sphar, Emergency Department Manager also works very closely with other hospital leaders to coordinate on patient flow throughout the hospital to mitigate some of the overarching factors that impact those ED wait times. She also proactively reaches out to outside emergency response partners as well. Sphar adds, “Working with our EMS partners in a proactive way adds to our overall approach to delivering care to our patients in the best way possible through collaboration and partnership.”
