Legacy Meridian Park nurse Katie Johnson earns coveted Gustafson Award
Katie Johnson, CNA, is humbled at the surprise of being presented with the Legacy Health Gustafson Employee Award. While she is searching for the words to express her appreciation and gratitude for the honor, her coworkers had plenty to say. Katie was nominated not just by members of her unit but by other departments in the hospital where impact of her work is felt.
The Gustafson Employee Award was created to honor an individual who had an enormous impact on the development of what we know today as Legacy Health. In May 1955, Oscar Gustafson, Jr., joined Emanuel Hospital as a Business Manager. He retired in 1984 as President of Metropolitan Hospitals. (The health system name previously held by Healthlink, which would become Legacy Health System in 1989).
“I am not just thankful for the amazing team I work with who can make magic happen, but also for Katie. Katie is a master at the job she does. She knows every single patient, she keeps track of them, she communicates to multiple units about them, and she just gets her job done right every single time. She can sense when the nurses are busy and when she needs to just stay and settle a patient for a bit longer so a nurse can catch up for second. Katie is accountable beyond words,” says staff nurse and orthopedic coordinator Sarah Roberts.
Nurse Cathie Currie shares that, “To Katie, each person is special and valued - very important when one has undergone a stressful event. It sure is different when she isn't there, and you realize how very important she is to our mission to provide excellent compassionate care with grace and humor.”
“Katie is a shining example of the best of what Meridian Park/Legacy has to offer. She is committed to making this hospital the best for her patients, families and co-workers!” “She is truly the glue that holds us all together, “extolls Erin McKay, Surgical Services manager.
Considering all the values defined in the Legacy Health Preferred Employee Profile, it is more than evident that Katie exemplifies them all with grace and stands as a beacon for others. Well done Katie – congratulations on an honor well-deserved!
