Inpatient Medicine Pediatric hospitalists care for children in the hospital To provide better patient care and support of community doctors, Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center offer teams of doctors known as pediatric hospitalists. Pediatric hospitalists are physicians and nurse practitioners trained and experienced in the inpatient management of acutely ill patients. Members of this team are present in the hospital at all times. They help patients and their families because they know the hospital and staff, and they work exclusively with children. Pediatric hospitalists also have a close working relationship with the sub-specialists and act as team leaders for many patients to be sure their care is coordinated among the various physicians. They make every effort to practice "family-centered rounding," in which they engage patients and parents in the daily planning of care along with the bedside nurse, therapists and case managers. Because they have almost daily contact with the primary care doctors by telephone or with electronic documents, pediatric hospitalists are an important link in communicating between parents and the patient's private practitioner, assisting with smooth transition after discharge.
