During the acute stage, submit in enteric transport media (ETM).

Collect

Stool collected in enteric transport media (ETM). Deliver to lab ASAP.

Handling

In preservative up to 24 hours, refrigerated.

Preferred Volume

Container filled to fill line, and not overfilled.

Minimum Volume

Under-filled transport vials are unacceptable.

Transport

ASAP to lab, or 24 hours refrigerated.

Rejection Criteria

Fresh stool, over-filled vials, and older than 24 hours refrigerated.

Stability

24 hours refrigerated.

Note

This does not include E. coli 0157, or other enteric pathogens.

Reference Values

No vibrio isolated.

Critical Values

Positive for vibrio.
