Guidelines

During the acute stage, submit stool in enteric transport media (ETM).

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Stool collected in enteric transport media (ETM).  Deliver to lab ASAP.

Handling

In preservative up to 24 hours refrigerated.

Preferred Volume

Container filled to fill line, and not over-filled.

Minimum Volume

Under-filled enteric transport media (ETM) vials are not acceptable.

Transport

ASAP to lab, or up to 24 hours refrigerated.

Rejection Criteria

Fresh stool, over-filled enteric transport media (ETM) vials, and specimens >24 hours refrigerated.

Stability

24 hours refrigerated.

Note

This does not include E. coli 0157, or other enteric pathogens.
