Guidelines

This panel is for Neonates and Drug Endangered Children* under 18. This test will not be performed on adults 18 or older.

A drug endangered child is a person who lives in or is exposed to an environment where drugs, including pharmaceuticals, are present for any number of reasons, including trafficking and manufacturing of these drugs.*

This test is specifically designed to detect low level exposures only.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Drug endangered child: Urine in a sterile container.

Neonate: Use sterile cotton ball as an option.
Place sterile cotton ball in diaper. After a sufficient void, carefully transfer cotton ball to a labeled urine specimen cup and send to lab.

Handling

Refrigerate (2-8ºC) if unable to deliver to the lab within 3 days.

Preferred Volume

Drug Endangered Child: 30 mL

Neonate: 5 mL

Minimum Volume

Drug Endangered Child: 5 mL

Neonate: 0.5 mL

Transport

Ambient (20-25 ºC)
Refrigerate (2-8ºC) if unable to deliver to the lab within 3 days.

Rejection Criteria

If preferred volumes are not received, confirmation testing may not be performed.

Stability

Ambient (20-25°C): 3 days; Refrigerated (2-8°): 10 days; Frozen (<-10°C): 1 year

Note

If the screening result is above the cutoff level listed below, then a confirmation test will be performed at an additional charge. Buprenorphine is a Presumptive screen only; confirmation is a send out upon request.
