Plasma Ethanol - Serum Ethanol
Specimen Collection Requirements
Preferred: Plasma, one 4.0 mL gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate) top tube. Also acceptable: Serum or heparinized plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red, or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube.
Keep sample tube tightly capped to prevent evaporation of alcohol. Allow serum specimens to clot completely (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or heparinized plasma from cells ASAP.
Grossly hemolyzed specimens
KEEP TIGHTLY CAPPED. Ambient (20-25°C): 4 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 3 days; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 3 months

Excitement: 10-50 mg/dL
Flushing, slowing of reflexes, impaired visual activity: 50-100 mg/dL
Depression of CNS: >100 mg/dL
Fatalities reported: >400 mg/dL
