Guidelines

The combined aldosterone/renin tests are preferred (see Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio) for diagnosing hyperaldosteronism.


Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

If upright specimen is collected, patient should be seated or standing for at least 2 hours.

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Separate serum from cells ASAP after collection.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS or within 2 hours of collection: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: 1 month
