Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Plasma, one 3.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Separate from cells within 30 minutes of collection. Minimize exposure to air by keeping the tube sealed as much as possible. If testing cannot be performed within 30 minutes of venipuncture, plasma must be separated from the cells and stored frozen at or below -20 degrees Celsius.

0.2 mL

Transport

Frozen at or below -20 degrees Celsius.

Transport on dry ice.

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed plasma specimens, specimens from patients who have smoked during the 7 hours before blood collection

Stability

Refrigerated whole blood: 30 minutes after venipuncture, centrifuge ASAP.

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Frozen (at or below -20°C): 24 hours
