Guidelines

This testing should only be ordered when a urine specimen is not available for testing. Urine is the preferred specimen for drugs of abuse testing.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 7 mL red, two 4 mL dark green (sodium heparin), or two 4 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes.

SST and PST tubes are NOT recommended.

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

3 mL

Minimum Volume

1 mL serum (Whole Blood 2.5 mL minimum draw)

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Frozen whole blood, gross hemolysis, specimens collected in PST or SST tubes that were not removed from the gel separator within 24 hours

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
