Guidelines

ANA specimens are screened using an ELISA assay. All specimens that screen positive or equivocal are confirmed using HEp-2 cells, and if positive, the titer and pattern will be reported. Positive IFA will reflex to dsDNA and ENA

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, One 5.0 mL gold (SST) top tube

Handling

Allow blood to clot for 30 minutes. Centrifuge and separate serum from cells immediately. Pour serum into plastic tube.

Preferred Volume

2.5 mL

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL

Transport

Refrigerated if arrival in the Legacy Central Laboratory is within 48 hours. Freeze if transport requires longer than 48 hours.

Rejection Criteria

Plasma and other body fluids; severely lipemic or bacterially contaminated specimens

Stability

COLLECTION TO INITIATION OF TESTING AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient: 8 hours; refrigerated: 48 hours
