This is the screen portion of the Type and Screen test.

Guidelines

Used to screen for unexpected antibodies in plasma by use of red cells with known antigenic makeup. Useful in pre-transfusion testing, antibody identification, prenatal screening and evaluation of potential causes of hemolysis. A positive test must be followed up with antibody identification.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Adult: one full 10 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes. Neonates <4 months: two full lavender top microtainer tubes. Pediatrics =4 months: 3 - 6 full lavender top microtainer tubes.

Handling

Tubes must be labeled appropriately. See Blood Bank Specimen Collection Guidelines.

Preferred Volume

One full 10.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Minimum Volume

Two lavender top microtainer tubes; Neonates <4 months: one lavender top microtainer tube

Transport

Ambient or refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Gross hemolysis, incorrect specimen container, incorrectly labeled or frozen specimen

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
