Guidelines

Do not use this test to order Cerebrospinal Fluid Cell Count, see Cerebrospinal Fluid Cell Count. Chemistry tests must be ordered separately for body and synovial fluids.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Synovial or Body Fluid in lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Mix sample tube gently, end over end, 8-10 times immediately after collection.

Preferred Volume

2.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Totally clotted specimen, specimen submitted on swab, frozen specimen

Stability

Ambient: Unopened, 8 hours; Opened, 4 hours; Refrigerated: Unopened 24 hours, Opened (top removed post collection), 4 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable
