CALCIUM, IONIZED, SERUM

Mnemonic

CAIS

Synonym

Ionized Calcium Outreach Serum - Calcium Ionized Serum Level - Calcium Free - Calcium - iCa

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum:  1 full SST tube (preferred) or non-gel serum tube.

**Collect anaerobically--do not open the tube until immediately prior to analysis**

Handling

All specimens should be collected under anaerobic conditions. For anaerobic samples, do not remove the top of the tube before analysis. Any loss of CO2 will increase the pH, which decreases ionized calcium. Do not store specimens on ice. Allow blood in serum separator tube (SST) to clot completely, at least 30 minutes. Spin SST within 1 hour of collection. Do not remove top from tube.

Preferred Volume

Full serum tube

Minimum Volume

1/2 full serum tube

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8 C).

Rejection Criteria

Samples that have been opened prior to analysis, serum tubes < ½ full, grossly hemolyzed specimens, specimens in Heparin, EDTA, citrate, oxalate and sodium fluoride anticoagulants, capillary specimens

Stability

Serum

Full Tubes: Ambient (20-25°C): 4 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 70 hours; Do not freeze.

½ full Tubes: Ambient (20-25°C): 4 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 4 hours; Do not freeze.
