CHROMOSOMAL ANALYSIS PRODUCTS OF CONCEPTION OR STILLBIRTH
Karyotype - Karyotyping - Chromosomes - Chromosome Study - Cytogenetics
Specimen Collection Requirements
Biopsy of viable tissue that is fetal in addition to extraembryonic in origin, obtained aseptically
Do not send the entire products of conception (POC) or stillbirth. If necessary, send POC to Pathology for dissection first.
Sending tissue from two sites is recommended. Chorionic villi or placenta are optimal due to increased viability in culture. Place in a screw-top container and cover with sterile Hanks BSS, normal saline or RPMI transport media. Do NOT place into formalin. Indicate the site of the tissue, i.e., heart, lung, thymus. Keep specimen at ambient temperature and transport within 24 hours.
Approximatey 1.0 cm3 viable tissue that is fetal in origin
Room temperature within 24 hours of collection
SPECIMENS SUBMITTED IN OR EXPOSED TO FORMALIN. Rejection is only at the discretion of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.
Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Suboptimal, call Cytogenetics Lab at (503) 413-4613
Testing Information
Clinical information including the indication for study must accompany the specimen. This includes a detailed list of congenital abnormalities noted prenatally or at the time of the demise, reproductive history with known carrier status for genetic conditions and gestational age of the fetal demise. Requisition forms for cytogenetics studies are available upon request.
Classical G-Band Chromosomal Analysis
Reference Values
Cytogenetics interpretation provided. A computer generated karyotype is also provided with each study.
Normal range:
46,XX, apparently normal female
46,XY, apparently normal male
