Specimen Collection Requirements
Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube, AND Urine, 20.0 mL aliquot of a 12 or 24 hour urine collection.
Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Preferably, separate serum or plasma from cells before transport. Urine: 12 or 24 hour collection container refrigerated (2-8°C). Submit patient’s height, weight and total volume of a 12 or 24 hour collection in the requisition.
1.0 mL serum or plasma AND 20.0 mL aliquot of urine
0.5 mL serum or plasma AND 2.0 mL aliquot of urine
Serum or Plasma: grossly hemolyzed specimens
SERUM OR PLASMA: Lithium heparin tubes (PST) are stable up to 7 days refrigerated on the primary spun gel tube AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient (20-25°C): 24 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 1 month. URINE: Ambient (20-25°C): 2 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 6 days; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 1 month
