Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Fasting is preferred. The sample should not be contaminated with intravenous fluids or heparin, unless the patient is receiving heparin therapy.

Collect

Serum, one red (non-SST) top tube

Blood should be drawn into a pre-warmed (37°C) plain red tube. If a syringe draw is used, it must be pre-warmed as well. Use of a Pharmaseal Infant Heel Warmer (104°F/40°C) is recommended.

Handling

Serum tube should be maintained at 37°C from time of draw until arrival in the lab. Allow the tube to clot in the 37°C heat block for half an hour. Centrifuge the tube and transfer the serum to a plastic tube. Keep the plastic tubes at room temperature until testing is performed. Once serum has been separated and placed in an aliquot tube, specimen may cool to below 37°C. DO NOT REFRIGERATE DURING PROCESSING OR FREEZE AT ANY TIME.

Preferred Volume

4 mL serum

Minimum Volume

2 mL serum

Transport

Specimen needs to be transported to the lab immediately, maintain at 37°C temperature

Rejection Criteria

Serum tubes not maintained at 37°C from time of draw until arrival in the lab and during clotting. Specimens that have been refrigerated prior to serum separation or frozen at any time. Plasma. Serum separator tubes (SST or clot-activating tubes). Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens.
