Guidelines

Use this order for normally sterile fluids except CSF, amniotic fluid and urine that have separate orders. Do not use this test order for swab specimens.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Aspirate of peritoneal, thoracentesis, synovial, pericardial, bile, or culdocentesis fluid

Handling

Collect specimen in sterile tightly sealed container, sterile-capped syringe with the needle removed, anaerobic transport tube or blood culture bottle. When using blood culture bottles, wipe septum with alcohol before inserting fluid. Must specify specific specimen source on order or requisition.

1.0-20.0 mL
