Exudate Culture - Drainage Culture - Wound Culture
Gram stain, anaerobic culture and susceptibility, if generally applicable
Preferably collect before therapy. Avoid swab collection if aspirates or biopsy samples are available. Do NOT use this order for actual pieces of tissue, see Culture, Tissue. Limit sampling to wounds that are clinically infected, chronic and nonhealing. Do not culture fresh bite wounds as they will contain respiratory organisms introduced with the bite and cannot predict cause of infection. Order AFB, Fungus and Virology separately.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Use culture collection-transport swab, swab in anaerobic transport tube or pus in sterile container. Collect sample from base or advancing margin of lesion.
Must specify specimen source on order or requisition. Notify Microbiology if specific organisms are being sought, such as the causative agents of Cat Scratch disease or Rat Bite Fever. Deliver to laboratory ASAP.
Frozen specimen, leaking or nonsterile containers, specimen in formalin type preservative
