Guidelines

May include eyelid margin, lacrimal sac, conjuctiva, corneal scrapings, corneal ring or vitreous humor. Obtain media from lab for corneal scraping direct inoculation. Separate order and collection needed for virus, chlamydia or fungus.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Drainage, aspirate using a culture collection and transport swab or mini-swab, or syringe

Handling

Submit capped syringe with needle removed or fluid in sterile container. Corneal rings in anaerobic transport or sterile container. Label as to right or left eye.

Minimum Volume

1 swab, 0.5 mL

Transport

Room temperature ASAP

Rejection Criteria

Frozen, refrigerated or dry specimen, leaking or nonsterile containers

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours in transport media
