Culture includes testing for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, E. coli. 0157. Testing for Yersinia or Vibrio upon request.
For optimal sensitivity, submit specimen during the acute stage of infection. Do NOT submit specimens from patients on broad spectrum antibiotics, or after the third hospitalization day, consider C. difficile testing instead.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Refer to SHS Laboratory Internet Specimen Collection Guidelines for instructing patients. Stool is to be collected in one Enteric Transport Media (ETM) vial and refrigerated within one hour of collection.
Refrigerate Stool in Enteric Transport
Leaky or dry specimen, delayed transport more than 1 hour without use of Enteric Transport and specimens collected from bedpans, contaminated with urine
48 hours refrigerated, in Enteric Transport Media (ETM) vial
Specify if Vibrio or Yersinia is to be ruled out. Selective medium for recovery of Vibrio or Yersinia is not included in routine set-up.
Bacterial culture and Shiga toxin antigen.
Samaritan Health Services Laboratories
Negative for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, E. coli 0157. Growth of usual fecal flora.
