Guidelines

Early morning collection is preferred. NOT for N. gonorrhoeae or chlamydia isolation.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Urine in a sterile screw cap container, Boric acid transport tube is acceptable.

Handling

Specify collection mode: cath, voided, superpubic, etc. on order or requisition. Deliver immediately to the lab or refrigerate sample.

Preferred Volume

15.0-20.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Rejection Criteria

Specimens from catheter bag, Foley catheter tips, frozen, in formalin type preservative, pooled or 24 hour specimens, leaking or nonsterile container

Stability

Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Boric acid tube ambient to 48 hours
