Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Dermal/Ocular/Rectal: BBL Culture swab; Respiratory Specimen or Sterile Body Fluid: Sterile container(s)

Handling

Dermal/Ocular/Rectal Specimen: Place swab back into swab cylinder. Respiratory Specimen: bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, nasopharyngeal aspirate or washing, sputum, or tracheal aspirate accepted. Sterile Body Fluid: Do not centrifuge. Specimen source is required on the requisition and container.

Minimum Volume

Dermal/Ocular/Rectal Specimen: 1 Swab, Respiratory Specimen: 1.5 mL, Sterile Body Fluid: 0.5 mL

Rejection Criteria

Calcium alginate-tipped swab, wood swab, transport swab containing gel, rectal swab must have no visible stool
