Specimen Collection Requirements
Trough levels are recommended. Reference ranges are based on trough levels. To obtain a trough level draw specimen just prior to next dose.<br />
Serum or Plasma, one 7.0 mL red, 4.0 mL dark green (sodium heparin), or 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube
Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma within one hour of collection.
0.25 mL serum or plasma (Whole Blood 1.0 mL minimum draw)
Serum or Plasma exposed to gel barrier (SST or PST) for more than 24 hours, grossly hemolyzed specimens
Ambient (18-26°C): 14 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 days; Frozen (< -20°C): 14 days

Reference Values
Ethosuximide levels will be falsely elevated in patients who are also taking Methsuximide (Celontin).
