Specimen Collection Requirements
For 3 days prior to and during the collection period: Patient should be a on fat-controlled diet (100-150 g fat per day). No laxatives, particularly mineral oil and castor oil. No synthetic fat substitutes (eg, Olestra) or fat blocking nutritional supplements. Barium interferes with test procedure; a waiting period of 48 hours before stool collection analysis is recommended. The use of diaper rash ointments will falsely elevate test results. Discontinue during collection period.
Entire stool collection, frozen. Indicate time of collection. Pre-weighed container provided by Legacy Laboratory Services.
Patient not following the patient preparation guidelines, specimens containing media or preservative, containers larger than 500 mL (500 g), specimens not collected in approved containers
Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 180 days; Frozen: 180 days
A separate collection should take place if other stool tests are ordered.
