Guidelines

This is a screening test to detect massive fetal-maternal bleeds in Rh negative mothers with Rh positive infants. It is a component of the Rh Immune Globulin workup on patients who have reached at least 28 weeks gestation.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Two full 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Handling

Tubes must be labeled appropriately. See Blood Bank Specimen Collection Guideline.

Preferred Volume

One full 10.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes

Minimum Volume

One 4 ml lavender (EDTA) top tube

Transport

Ambient or refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Gross hemolysis, incorrect specimen container, incorrectly labeled or frozen specimens

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 2 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
