Specimen Collection Requirements
Whole Blood, one 4.0 mL or 2.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube - minimum 1/2 full; or one micro lavender (EDTA) top container - minimum 1/2 full. Amniotic Fluid, one 4.0 mL or 2.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube - minimum 1/2 full. Must specify specimen is amniotic fluid.
Micro containers are not acceptable for amniotic fluid. Non-anticoagulated specimens are acceptable provided specimen is not clotted. Must meet minimum specimen volumes. The collection container must be filled to a minimum of one half of the maximum sample volume (i.e. 4.0 mL tube must have 2.0 mL of blood). The collection tubes must not be filled to more then the maximum sample volume. Blood should be processed within 24 hours of collection. EDTA is the preferred specimen with a 2 week stability. Oxalate is acceptable, but is only stable for 24 hours Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
Whole Blood: Refrigerate at 2-8°C; Amniotic Fluid: Refrigerate at 2-8°C
Under filled tube, overfilled tube, frozen, clotted or grossly hemolyzed samples, incorrect anticoagulant
Ambient (18-21°C): 12 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 weeks
