Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Body Fluid, one sterile container

Handling

Centrifuge and separate an aliquot of the Body fluid sample from cellular matter within 1 hour of collection.

Centrifuge and store the glucose aliquot in a green top Li Heparin tube with separator gel (PST).

Do not centrifuge the entire specimen if additional testing is (or may be) ordered on the fluid

Specify the body fluid source on the collection container and test request form.

Comments

Specimens that are not separated from cellular matter within 1 hour after collection may show decreased glucose values.

However, due to the irretrievable nature of the body fluid specimens, samples will not be rejected for glucose testing by SHS laboratories if not processed within this time frame.
