Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole Blood or Plasma, one dark green (sodium, ammonium heparin) top tube DO NOT USE PST (GEL) TUBES

Handling

Refrigerate specimen. Avoid hemolysis. Separate from cells within 30 minutes of collection. Spin 10 minutes at 1,000 RCF. Remove plasma from cells and spin again at 1,500 RCF for 20 minutes.

1.0 mL Plasma

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL Plasma, (Whole Blood 1.2 mL minimum draw)

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Grossly hemolyzed specimens

Stability

WHOLE BLOOD: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 30 minutes; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 30 minutes; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 1 day; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 1 month
