Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or plasma (Acceptable anticoagulants include lithium heparin, sodium heparin, di-potassium EDTA)

Handling

Specimens may be stored on or off the clot, red blood cells, or separator gel for up to 3 days at room temperature (study performed at 23 to 30°C) or up to 7 days at 2-8°C. If testing will be delayed more than 3 days for specimens stored at room temperature or more than 7 days for specimens stored at 2-8°C, remove serum or plasma from the clot, red blood cells, or separator gel and store at -20°C or colder. Avoid more than three freeze/thaw cycles.

2.0 mL

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C), if the specimen will be delayed more than 48 hours, freeze serum at = -20°C

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed specimens with obvious microbial contamination.

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient (20-25°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (= -20°C): 2 months
