Specimen Collection Requirements
Body fluid, one sterile container
Centrifuge and separate to remove cellular material. It is better to not refrigerate or freeze the specimen, but to hold them at room temperature (15-25°C) with analysis done ASAP. Specify type of body fluid on the collection container and test request form.
INPATIENTS: Room temperature (15-25°C), run specimen immediately OUTPATIENTS: Refrigerated (2-8°C)
Hemolyzed, frozen or specimens collected in EDTA, potassium oxalate, or sodium fluoride as anticoagulants
AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLULAR MATERIAL: Ambient (20-25°C): 3 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 1 week; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable
