Guidelines

This is a screening test from nasal site only for carriage of MRSA on patients older than 4 years of age. It does not include a susceptibility report. For patients 4 years of age and younger order a Staph Screen.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Nasal swabs from both nostrils on dual swab transport:  BD/BBL Culture Swab or Copan Venturi Transystem with Liquid Stuart (red cap swab), or BD Culture Swab or Copan Venturi Transystem plus Amies gel.

Handling

Deliver ASAP to the laboratory.

Rejection Criteria

Leaking or nonsterile containers, incorrect swab.

Stability

22-25°C up to 6 days, 2-6°C up to 5 days, and -15 to -25 for up to one month.
