Specimen Collection Requirements

Refer to detailed specimen collection guidelines for pertinent technique being used. Handling

All containers must be labeled with the patient’s first and last name. If prepared slides are submitted the patient’s last name and first initial should also be penciled onto the frosted end of the slide. Prepared slides should be fixed immediately by immersing in 95% ethanol (Pap bottle). Liquid based Pap fixative vials should be submitted with the caps securely tightened to avoid leakage.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens with absent or questionable patient identification on the slides, vials or accompanying paperwork will be returned to the ordering provider.
