Guidelines

Assay is Performed Using Roche Diagnostic's Third Generation PSA reagents.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red top tube or Li Heparin Plasma

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP.

1.0 mL

Frozen (at or below -20°C)

Grossly hemolyzed specimens and plasma

Interpretation of %fPSA Ratio: A higher percentage of free PSA indicates a lower probability of finding carcinoma on biopsy in patients with total PSA between 4 and 10 ng/mL. Different authorities recommend percentages of free PSA less than 24-27% before proceeding to biopsy in these patients. Method: electro-chemiluminescence on the Roche COBAS 6000
