REDUCING SUBSTANCES, URINE
Due to a manufacturer’s extended backorder, Clinitest tablets, used to test for reducing substances in the urine of infants less than two years of age, will not be available for an indefinite period.
Today, all states require mandatory newborn screening for more than 30 inborn errors of metabolism. This testing detects galactosemia, which is the most common inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism. Other diseases of carbohydrate metabolism (except diabetes) have much lower prevalence or are clinically more benign than galactosemia and do not require screening of asymptomatic newborns.
Based on this information, and the unavailability of product, Legacy Laboratory is discontinuing automatic reflex Clinitests effective immediately. As soon as supplies are available, the test will be reinstated but performed only upon physician-specific order.
