Guidelines

Patient should obtain collection instructions form and collection container BEFORE collecting sample. See Patient Instructions for Collecting Semen Fertility Screen Sample.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Semen, entire sample, in a sterile plastic container.

Handling

Patient should collect a semen sample by masturbation following the laboratory's collection instructions. Sample must be received within 30 minutes of collection. Protect from temperature extremes by keeping container near body. Patient must complete the form and bring the form and sample to the designated location within 30 minutes of collection.

Preferred Volume

The entire sample should be collected into a sterile plastic container.

Minimum Volume

Entire sample must be submitted. Minimum of 1.0 mL required for complete technical analysis.

Rejection Criteria

Specimen collected in condom, with lubricant or by withdrawal, exposure to temperature extremes, incompletely collected samples, delivery of specimen more than 2 hours post collection

Stability

Between 20°C - 40°C, 30 minutes. Some parameters are stable up to 2 hours (Volume, Count, Morphology)
