Guidelines

Severe infections may occur in immunocompromised patients. Congenital Toxoplasmosis may present risk to the fetus.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum – SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP.

Preferred Volume

0.5 mL Serum

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Serum (0.75 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed, icteric or lipemic specimens; contaminated specimens; heat inactivated specimens; plasma.

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room temperature (18-26°C): Unacceptable; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (≤ -10°C): Unacceptable.

Reference Values

<= 7.1 IU/mL          Negative for Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody. A negative result does not rule out acute infection. Repeat testing in 7-14 days may be helpful.

7.2 – 8.7 IU/mL      Equivocal for Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody. Repeat testing in 7-14 days may be helpful.

>= 8.8 IU/mL         Positive for Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody.
